Hours: 9am until 5pm, 2 days per week - Tuesday & Friday ideally

Salary: £14 p/h

Duration: Permanent

We are excited to be working exclusively with our prestigious client in their search for a Payroll Administrator to join their small, but busy team.

As an experienced Payroll Administrator, you will be confident in payroll processes, managing pension payments and be adaptable to manage busy workload when necessary.

You will be part of a team that includes the Assistant Bursar, Finance and three Administrators each responsible for Purchase Ledger, Sales Ledger and Payroll. Although each member of the team has their own role and responsibilities, all members of the team are expected to support each other at busier times in each of the roles, to ensure the department meets its most important priorities and an excellent level of customer service is provided all.

The Role:


  • Manage new starters and leavers on the payroll system
  • Process any further adjustments to payroll e.g., notifications from HMRC, sickness returns, overtime timesheets, ensuring all additional payments have been authorised prior to processing
  • Manage salary sacrifice arrangements on Payroll system
  • Run monthly payroll and prepare reporting for sign-off by the Bursar
  • Prepare payroll payments from bank
  • Email pay slips to staff
  • Respond to payroll queries from members of staff
  • Prepare and process HMRC returns including monthly, yearly, SSP, SMP, etc
  • Prepare any necessary pension returns on behalf of the school
  • Reconcile payroll control account monthly
  • Reconcile Payroll system (IRIS) to General Ledger accounts (iFinance) monthly
  • Help Assistant Bursar, Finance in automating payroll procedures where possible and improving processes


  • Manage various payroll scheme payments on behalf of the school including upload of pension files where required


  • Work alongside HR Manager with all of the above to ensure records are complete and accurate
  • Reconcile pupil disbursement accounts to match charges for extras against costs incurred
  • Prepare and take ad hoc cash/cheques to bank where necessary but encourage online banking
  • Support other members of the team where necessary e.g., standing order calculations, charge uploads to Fee Billing
  • Any other reasonable tasks as required by the Assistant Bursar, Finance or Bursar

The Person:

  • Previous experience and sound knowledge of managing a Payroll system
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft products
  • Bookkeeping / online banking experience
  • An aptitude for IT and working knowledge of software packages
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work to deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Team player and problem solver
  • Willingness to support others and be flexible when workload requires
  • Ability to plan, organise and prioritise own workload
  • Ability to work closely with other teams
